In this family session on cultural studies, participants compare humans to animals such as the bowerbird, which decorates its nest with colourful objects. Together they explore how people decorate their hair with feathers, paint patterns on their bodies, build unusual houses, invent traditions and turn ordinary objects into symbols, learning how cultural studies helps notice meanings hidden in everyday things. The session is led by Maria Sterligova, a teacher of cultural studies and art history and author of educational programmes.
